In August 2025, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga sat on top ahead of Dzire, Creta, WagonR, Nexon, Brezza and Baleno in India

The sales charts in the month of August 2025 once again highlighted Maruti Suzuki’s dominance but there were changes up and down the pecking order. SUVs continue to attract large volumes but compact sedan and hatchback segments have made a comeback in the domestic market with Hyundai and Tata models featuring in the top ten.

At the top, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga recorded sales of 18,445 units – a marginal 1 per cent decline compared to last year. Despite the dip, the Ertiga maintained its position as India’s best-selling car for the month – largely due to its balance between personal and fleet appeal. Close behind was the Maruti Suzuki Dzire which posted a remarkable 55 per cent growth with 16,509 units – reaffirming its popularity in the sedan space.

The Hyundai Creta took third place with 15,924 units – down 5 per cent year-on-year. The Creta continues to be Hyundai’s most popular offering in India and remains one of the most consistent performers in the midsize SUV space. Fourth place went to the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R at 14,552 units – though it faced a sharp 12 per cent decline compared to August 2024.

Tata Motors’ Nexon secured the fifth spot with 14,004 units – registering a healthy 14 per cent rise year-on-year. With petrol, diesel and electric versions on sale, the Nexon’s flexibility makes it a strong contender across multiple buyer categories. One of its main rivals, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza followed at sixth with 13,620 units sold but its 29 per cent drop indicates the rising competition in the compact SUV category.

In seventh place, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno registered 12,549 units with a modest 1 per cent gain – reflecting steady demand in the premium hatchback segment. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx managed a domestic tally of 12,422 units last month – holding flat compared to the same period last year and proving that it has quickly carved out a space of its own.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift came in ninth with 12,385 units – down 4 per cent year-on-year. While the dip was small, the Swift continues to be one of the most recognisable and widely purchased hatchbacks in India. Rounding out the list was the Maruti Suzuki Eeco with 10,785 units sold – a minor 2 per cent slide.

Overall, seven of the top ten cars belonged to Maruti Suzuki – further reiterating its commanding position in the Indian market. Tata and Hyundai made their presence felt too. The data shows that while SUVs command much of the buzz, changes do happen!
