In August 2025, Maruti Suzuki retained its top spot while Hyundai moved up to second ahead of Tata, Mahindra, Toyota, Kia, MG, Skoda and Honda
The auto market recorded total sales of 3,27,719 units in August 2025 – indicating a year-on-year decline of 7.5 per cent. While the numbers point to a slowdown compared to August 2024, a closer look at the top 10 manufacturers shows that market leaders continued to dominate while the GST 2.0 benefits should help pump up volumes in the coming months.
Maruti Suzuki once again led the charts selling a domestic tally of 1,31,278 units. However, the brand witnessed an 8.2 per cent YoY drop against the 1,43,075 units sold a year ago. Market share also slipped slightly from 40.4 per cent to 40.1 per cent – though it remains comfortably ahead of its rivals. Month-on-month, Maruti’s numbers were down by 4.7 per cent compared to July 2025.
Hyundai finished in the second spot with 44,001 units sold in August 2025 – down 11.2 per cent YoY. Despite the decline, the Korean brand managed to stay stable on a MoM basis with a marginal 0.1 per cent increase over July’s figures. Its market share stood at 13.4 per cent – a slight dip from last year’s 14 per cent.

Tata Motors secured third place with 41,001 units – slipping 7.1 per cent compared to August 2024. Unlike Maruti and Hyundai, Tata showed improvement on a month-on-month basis – registering a 3.7 per cent growth over July 2025. Its market share held steady at 12.5 per cent. Mahindra followed closely in fourth position with 39,399 units – down 9 per cent YoY.
On a MoM basis, the drop was sharper at 21 per cent compared to July 2025. Its market share dipped slightly from 12.2 per cent to 12 per cent. Toyota emerged as one of the few gainers among the top five. It sold 29,302 units in August 2025 – enduring a 2.5 per cent YoY increase. Market share grew from 8.1 per cent to 8.9 per cent while MoM sales were stable with a 0.5 per cent rise.

Models like Innova Hycross and Hyryder contributed significantly to this growth along with the badge engineered models. Kia secured sixth position with 19,608 units but saw a 12.9 per cent YoY decline. Its MoM sales also fell 11.4 per cent – bringing market share down to 6 per cent from 6.4 per cent last year.
Rounding out the top 10 were MG, Skoda, Honda and Renault, each showing varying performances as MG and Skoda reported decent YoY growth while Honda and Renault experienced declines.
