Tesla Model Y has become the first car to complete a fully unassisted delivery run, travelling from the factory to a customer’s home

A Tesla Model Y has become the first vehicle to deliver itself fully unassisted from factory to customer home as it completed the trip across Austin, Texas without a driver on board or any remote input. The electric SUV departed alone from Tesla’s Gigafactory, navigated city streets, highways and traffic signals along the way.

The fully autonomous vehicle parked itself at the end of the nearly half an hour route. Not a single person entered the car at any point during the journey according to the brand and its CEO. The entire run was filmed from the back seat and later released by Tesla following an earlier time lapse. It comes right after several questions raised over Tesla’s implementation of fully autonomous tech.

The footage showed the Model Y responding to stop signs, red lights, intersections and traffic flow, executing turns and lane changes autonomously. The delivery marks the first time Tesla has showcased complete autonomy on public roads as no humans were in the car and no assistance from a control centre. The American company previously demonstrated early versions of its hands-free system in April.

Back then, vehicles moved themselves from factory assembly areas to outdoor parking without human drivers. But the Austin delivery marks a significant milestone, putting that technology onto real roads. According to Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Autopilot and AI lead, the vehicle hit speeds up to 115 kmph during the trip without any assistance.

Just days before this feat, Tesla began a limited rollout of its robotaxi system in Austin. Select investors and online creators were offered rides in fully driverless Model Y units. Elon Musk had foreshadowed both developments – the robotaxi pilot and self-driving delivery – in earlier posts, reiterating Tesla’s intention to put millions of autonomous EVs into service in the near future.

Meanwhile, with demand for electric vehicles showing signs of cooling in regions like North America and Europe, Tesla is doubling down on advanced AI projects including the Optimus humanoid robot as these new projects are being framed as the company’s next growth vector, even as its public image continues to be shaped by Musk’s often divisive online presence.
