A host of new hybrid SUVs is waiting in the pipeline and here we take a look at the 7-seater models that could arrive in the near future
The SUV surge shows no signs of slowing and brands are working harder than ever to reel in buyers with new strategies. A new pattern is beginning to take shape across the upcoming range of launches – the increasing use of hybrid powertrains. For a growing number of manufacturers and consumers alike, hybrids are becoming the middle ground.
With patchy charging infrastructure and lingering range anxiety, full EVs remain a hesitant leap for many buyers. Hybrids are stepping into that void, offering familiarity without giving up efficiency. A deeper look at what lies ahead in the hybrid pipeline gives a clear sense of where the market may be heading next:
1. Hyundai Premium SUV:
A new premium SUV is reportedly under development at Hyundai, internally known by the codename Ni1i. Positioned between the Alcazar and the Tucson, this future model is expected to fill the brand’s upper-mid-tier SUV gap. If development and timelines remain steady, market introduction may take place in 2027.

The project is also linked to Hyundai’s Talegaon plant, which is gearing up to begin production activities. Should plans proceed as projected, the Ni1i SUV might become the second product to be manufactured at the facility. Under the hood, Hyundai is expected to equip the vehicle with a hybrid petrol powertrain.
2&3. Renault & Nissan 3-Row SUVs:
Nissan’s next major SUV launch in India will target the midsize segment. A three-row iteration is also in the pipeline based on it – possibly scheduled for the following financial year. Both models are expected to share a considerable amount of their underpinnings with the upcoming new-gen Renault Duster. Both are expected to use a hybrid system as well and if it turns out to be the case, Renault could also follow the same approach.

4&5. 7-Seater Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder:
Plans for the three-row derivatives of both the Grand Vitara and the Toyota Hyryder could materialise in the near future as reports have often emerged. Should they move forward, the extended models would likely retain the existing 1.5L mild hybrid and 1.5L strong hybrid petrol engines currently in service.
