Tarun Garg is all set to become the first Indian MD & CEO at Hyundai Motor India starting January 1, 2026 succeeding Unsoo Kim

Hyundai Motor India Limited is preparing for a historic leadership change with Tarun Garg set to take over as Managing Director and CEO starting January 2026. It will make him the first Indian national to lead the company in its nearly three decade of presence in India. The transition comes as current MD Unsoo Kim returns to a strategic role at Hyundai Motor Company in South Korea.

Garg’s journey within HMIL has been rapid and impactful. Since joining in 2019 as Head of Sales, Service, and Marketing, he has overseen key customer-facing operations before stepping up as Chief Operating Officer in 2023 to manage the company’s expansive operational spectrum. Under his stewardship, Hyundai recorded its highest-ever domestic sales for three consecutive years.

His reign also saw the South Korean auto major posting record profitability with FY24 representing the company’s strongest EBITDA margin to date. One of the major highlights of Garg’s tenure has been the successful execution of HMIL’s Initial Public Offering in 2024 which set a record as the largest IPO in the history of the Indian equity markets.

His background spans sales, marketing, distribution, financial management and product strategy, giving him a wholesome view of automotive operations. According to Hyundai, the focus under Garg will continue on key pillars such as customer-centric growth, future-ready strategy, local manufacturing and supply chain enhancement and expanding India’s role as a global export hub.

I would also like to thank Unsoo for his hard work and dedication in helping lay the foundation for the success HMIL enjoys today. We wish you luck on your next assignment.”
