Rishabh Pant Comes Out To Bat With Fractured Foot: Rishabh Pant, in an excellent example of grit and determination, has taken to the crease for the Indian Cricket Team less than 24 hours after suffering a fracture in his foot on the first day of the ongoing Test against England.

Today is Day two of the fourth England vs India Test of the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. England won the toss and decided to bowl first. On the first day, the Indian opening duo scored 94 runs together. Yashasvi Jasiwal scored a half-century, and KL Rahul nearly did so. Captain Shubman Gill failed to score big, getting out on 12.

The fourth-wicket partnership of young batter Sai Sudharsan and vice-captain Rishabh Pant saved the inning, going from 140/3 to past the 200-run mark.

With the team at 212 runs, bowler Chris Woakes bowled a yorker in the 67th over of the day, which hit Pant directly on the right foot. While England’s DRS appeal did not result in anything, it was clear that the wicketkeeper-batter was in extreme discomfort. Almost the entire Indian support staff came to his aid.

When Rishabh took his shoe and sock off his right foot, the camera caught some nasty swelling at the point of impact. Pant was taken off the field in a mini-ambulance. He was immediately rushed to a medical facility for scanning, which revealed a mild compound fracture.

After the end of Day One, which saw India at 264/4 with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur at strike, the question on everyone’s mind was how India would fill the Rishabh Pant-sized hole. An injury like this required at least six weeks of rest, which would put Rishabh out of commission for the rest of the series.

As for this match, while backup keeper Dhruv Jurel can be the wicketkeeper when the side is bowling, he cannot replace Pant in the second inning while batting, as the ICC rules state that a batting substitution can be made only in case of a concussion injury, which Pant has not suffered.

However, in an act of heroic will that will be remembered for a long time, Rishabh Pant has taken to the field with a fractured foot. And while he is clearly struggling to hit the ball, he is on the pitch and will only leave after he is out.
