Mahindra continues to sell the highest number of diesel-powered cars in the Indian market; More than 4.25 lakh diesel SUVs sold in FY2025
Mahindra & Mahindra currently sports an extensive line-up of diesel-powered SUVs, including Scorpio, XUV700, XUV3XO, Thar and Thar Roxx. The majority of sales for the Indian SUV manufacturer comes from diesel engines, and in FY2025, it acquired 55% of the total diesel market share. More than 75% of the Mahindra SUVs sold in India were powered by diesel engines in FY2025, followed by petrol and EVs.
Petrol fuel contributed 20.5% to the brand’s overall sales, while the share of EVs stood at 2.3%. The XUV3XO is the best-selling petrol SUV for Mahindra, followed by the XUV700 and Scorpio N. The Thar 3-Door saw the least buyers for the petrol variants, while the Thar Roxx performed much better, thanks to the aggressive pricing of the petrol trims. The newly launched XEV 9e and BE 6 contributed significantly to the electric vehicle sales despite going on sale around the end of FY2025.
Mahindra continued its stronghold in the diesel segment throughout FY2025. The company currently has three diesel engines in its portfolio, i.e. 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo diesel, 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel and the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel, which is offered in multiple states of tune. Since the Bolero is a diesel-only model, 100% of its sales come from the diesel engine.

Talking about Mahindra’s best-selling model, the Scorpio (Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N), the SUVs together contributed 1.53 lakh units to the diesel sales. On the other hand, only 11,447 units of the petrol variants were sold, and 100% of this is contributed by Scorpio N, as the Scorpio Classic is only available with a diesel powertrain.
The XUV700 added 70,172 units to the diesel sales, followed by the Thar and Thar Roxx, with 43,009 units and 32,410 units, respectively. The XUV3XO is the least-performing SUV for the company in terms of diesel engine sales, which comes down to the sub-4-meter SUV segment it is positioned in, where buyers prioritise the petrol fuel option.
