Mitchell Starc will play in India’s ODIs again

For the three-match series against India that begins in Perth on October 19, Mitchell Starc will come back in the Australian ODI lineup. In addition to the star fast bowler, Matthew Short and Mitchell Owen have been called up to the 15-man squad after recovering from side strains and concussions, respectively.

Since Pat Cummins chose to forego this white-ball assignment in order to recover in time for the November 21 start of the Ashes series, Mitchell Marsh will continue to captain the team.

In advance of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, Cricket Australia has also revealed the team for the opening two matches of the five-match T20I series, which will take place from October 29 to November 8.

Australia ODI Squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Renshaw, Matthew Short, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa

Australia T20I squad (first two games): Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.

In order to manage his schedule for this summer’s Ashes series, Starc missed the South Africa series, so this will be his first assignment of the season. He is no longer playing T20I cricket.

The ODI team has a number of departing players. These include Matthew Kuhnemann, Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott, and Marnus Labuschagne, who all played in Australia’s August ODI match against South Africa.

Renshaw has returned to the ODI setup for the first time since 2022 after impressive performances for Australia A and Queensland, while Alex Carey will miss the first ODI in Perth because he will be playing for the South Australian Redbacks against Queensland in the Sheffield Shield.

Travis Head, Josh Inglis, and the all-around combination of Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, and skipper Marsh make up the remaining team. Together with Starc, the pacers are Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, and Ben Dwarshuis. Lower down the order, Bartlett and Dwarshuis deliver a punch with the bat. The team’s only frontline spinner is Adam Zampa.

Green will play for Western Australia again after the ODI series to get ready for the forthcoming Ashes.

Ellis and Inglis rejoin the T20I team, while Maxwell remains out.

Both Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis have returned to the T20I team; Ellis missed the Chappell-Hadlee series due to the birth of his first child, while Inglis recovered from a calf injury. Nevertheless, Glenn Maxwell has not healed in time for the India assignment after suffering a strange injury to his wrist in the nets prior to that series.

Inglis is anticipated to take the gloves behind the stumps in the previous Twenty20 International match against New Zealand, leaving Josh Phillipe and Alex Carey out of the lineup.

Head, Marsh, Tim David, Inglis, Short, and Owen make up a potent batting lineup, while Stoinis remains in the lineup with Maxwell still sidelined due to injury. With Matthew Kuhnemann and Zampa as Australia’s spinners, Dwarshuis, Bartlett, Hazlewood, and Ellis make up the pacers’ pivot.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” said selection committee chair George Bailey.

“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
