A trio of all-new MPVs is set to land on Indian roads soon, each taking a distinctly different approach in terms of design, technology and powertrain
The multi-purpose vehicle segment in India is heading into a particularly active phase with a slew of new entries planned by key players like Kia, MG and Nissan. With launches spaced out over the coming quarters, the category is expected to grow more crowded and competitive across both premium and budget brackets. Here’s a closer look at what’s coming:
1. Nissan Compact MPV:
Built on the same CMF-A+ platform that underpins the Renault Kiger, Nissan’s upcoming MPV is expected to carry a price tag that undercuts rivals, thanks to a high degree of localisation. Production will take place at the joint facility near Chennai with powertrain choices spanning both naturally aspirated and turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engines. It will go on sale in early 2026.
2. Kia Clavis EV:
Kia has officially confirmed that the Carens Clavis EV will be unveiled in India on July 15, following close on the heels of the recently introduced ICE version. While the electric iteration will remain largely familiar in terms of its overall design, minor revisions to the exterior and select interior enhancements are expected to set it apart from its combustion-powered sibling. The Clavis EV will share several core components with the Hyundai Creta Electric including key elements of its electric powertrain and battery setup.
It is expected to be offered with two battery configurations with the larger unit potentially enabling a claimed range of over 450 km on a full charge. Inside, the feature list is set to be extensive. A large touchscreen infotainment system will take centre stage along with a fully digital instrument console. Ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, multiple airbags and Level 2 ADAS capabilities will be other highlights.
3. MG M9:
The MG M9 features a 90 kWh battery unit putting out 245 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. Its WLTP-certified driving range stands at approximately 430 km on a full charge. Pricing may start a little above Rs. 60 lakh (ex-showroom). Inside the cabin, the focus leans unmistakably toward comfort and opulence. Highlights include motorised rear sliding doors, dual-pane sunroofs, ventilated seating and fully reclining ottoman-style chairs, collectively positioning the M9 as a high-end electric MPV.
MG is preparing to launch the M9 in the coming months with the model expected to be available in three exterior colours. It will be retailed exclusively through the brand’s upscale ‘MG Select’ dealership network alongside the soon-to-arrive Cyberster electric roadster. Although the M9 shares its form factor with traditional luxury people movers like the Kia Carnival, its all-electric underpinnings set it apart, placing it in a unique category with no direct rival currently in the Indian market.
