Jasprit Bumrah Shines On Batting Heavy Day 2: Jasprit Bumrah showed his class, proving why he is considered by many as the greatest bowler in world cricket on a day which was otherwise dominated by the batters on both sides.
The 1st India vs England Test match out of five in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is currently underway at Headingley in Leeds. Today was Day 2 of this match. On the first day, after the home side won the toss and curiously decided to bat first, Indian batters notched up 359 runs on the day and lost only three wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill scored centuries, while Rishabh Pant scored a half-century.
At the start of Day 2, Shubman and Pant batted aggressively, taking the team past the 400-run mark. By the time Gill was dismissed for 147 off 227, Rishabh had scored a ton of his own while the team was at 430 runs.

But the skipper’s wicket broke the dam of the Indian innings; after Shubman Gill’s wicket, others came soon after. A few overs later, Karun Nair, who is making his Test return after eight years, got out for a duck. Pant departed soon after for 134, as the score was now 453/6.
The Indian lower order did not provide much resistance. Ravindra Jadeja got out after 11; Shardul Thakur scored only a single run; Jasprit Bumrah scored the third duck of the inning after Nair and debutant Sai Sudharsan; and Prasidh Krishna made just a single run as the Indian Cricket Team was all out for 471, losing their last seven wickets for 41 runs.
While it was a fine batting performance by India, many people seemed to have forgotten that England would bat on the same pitch with a slightly depleted bowling attack, without both Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin for a long time.
However, India did have Jasprit Bumrah, a video game cheat code form of a bowler. The ace pacer struck in the very first over of the inning, dismissing Zak Crawley for four. But then came the partnership that broke the back of Indian bowling.

The duo of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope didn’t just make runs with ease against the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna; the two were also scoring quick runs. While their partnership only lasted a little over 27 overs, the two made 122 runs together, with Duckett being bowled by Bumrah for 62.
Jasprit regularly went out of the field to rest and recuperate in order to manage his workload for this series. And while he gave away runs at a faster pace than usual, he looked dangerous every time he had the ball in his hand.
Meanwhile, Ollie Pope looked in his element today as he ended up with a quickfire century, made in 125 deliveries. But on the very next ball after he reached his milestone, Bumrah dismissed the consistently dangerous Joe Root.
While these were the wickets Jasprit Bumrah took today, there were several others he should have taken. Apart from several nicks and near LBW appeals, there was a catch dropped at backwards gully by none other than Ravindra Jadeja in the seventh over. This catch would have dismissed Duckett for just 15.
More crucially, in the 31st over of the inning, Pope, playing at 60, edged the ball towards Yashasvi Jasiwal at third slip, who dropped the ball after a decent effort.
This brings us to the final over of the day, bowled by Bumrah. With Root’s wicket having fallen not more than two overs ago, Ollie Pope on 100 and Harry Brook on zero just needed to see this over through. After two dots in the first two deliveries, the third one was a no-ball. The fourth ball (third legal delivery) was a dot. The next delivery was a no-ball again. Then, on the next one, Brook hit the ball high up and was caught at short mid-wicket, only for this ball to be deemed the third no-ball of the over.
The last three deliveries were absolute rippers by Bumrah, but no wicket fell. The English innings on Day 2 of the 1st India vs England Test match stands at 209/3 in 49 overs.
