Like Lexus, Genesis could be a niche luxury brand in India during the initial stage, relying on low-volume CBU imports

Hyundai is continuing to drop hints at Genesis India launch as it progresses with the plan. The company is exploring a number of new markets for the luxury brand, and India is one of these countries. At the 2025 CEO Investor Day, Hyundai President and CEO José Muñoz announced transformation plans for Genesis, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. The company is working on expanding the powertrain line-up, product portfolio, and global presence for further growth.

Hyundai plans to expand Genesis’s presence in Europe to 20 countries and launch the brand in new markets in the Asia-Pacific region as well, including emerging nations, Muñoz said during his presentation. Later, during the Q&A session, he said that while Hyundai is not expecting to become India’s no.1 carmaker, it is considering new opportunities to grow, by launching luxury models, for instance:

In India, we’re not expecting to grow (market) share. We’re no.2, we’re very solid, but we have more opportunities. This market has (an) opportunity to grow: no.1, to export—no problem there; (no. 2), perhaps an opportunity to launch our luxury brand (Genesis), because we have strong credibility – José Muñoz, President and CEO, Hyundai (2025 CEO Investor Day).

Hyundai introduced the Genesis brand—not to be confused with its Genesis E-segment sedan that was earlier under consideration for India—in November 2015. In December 2016, the company revealed the G90 (called EQ900 in South Korea) full-size sedan as the brand’s first product, and then in the following month, it renamed the Genesis E-segment sedan to G80.

Today, the Genesis line-up includes even a G70 D-segment sedan and a G70 Shooting Brake derived from it, as well as a GV60 C-segment SUV, a GV70 D-segment SUV, and a GV80 E-segment SUV. A GV90 full-size SUV is in the pipeline, and Muñoz indicated at the 2025 CEO Investor Day that a convertible derived from the X Gran Convertible Concept and an off-road SUV derived from the X Gran Equator Concept are also under consideration.

The current Genesis models are available with non-electrified internal combustion engines and also pure electric powertrains. The GV60 is an electric-only offering, while the GV70 and G80 are available with a pure electric powertrain as an option. Next year, Hyundai will launch the first Genesis model with a hybrid powertrain, and in the future beyond, it plans to offer a Genesis EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) as well.

The Genesis brand reached the ten million sales milestone in 2023. Hyundai expects to sell 225,000 Genesis cars this year and aims to increase the luxury brand’s annual sales to 350,000 units by 2030.
