How Can Shubman Gill Lead India Improve Fielding: Former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin gives Indian Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill advice on how to improve the team’s fielding ahead of the second India vs England Test match.
The Men in Blue will face England in the second of five Test matches of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy from July 2. The game will be played at Headingley in Leeds. The Three Lions won the first Test by five wickets in a game that was dominated by batters at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
India performed well with the bat in the first Test. While Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and captain Gill scored a century, Rishabh Pant scored one in both innings. Despite that, India ended up losing that match in convincing fashion on day 5.

Most of India’s problems in that match stemmed from their underwhelming bowling. Throughout the match, apart from Jasprit Bumrah, no Indian bowler looked like a threat. The two other frontline pacers, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, showed no edge and conceded runs like a limited-overs match.
However, another massive issue for the Indian Cricket Team was their fielding. Not only did the side concede several runs due to misfielding, but they also dropped a lot of catches. According to Opta, India dropped 10 catches against England in the first match, which is the most for the men’s team in a Test since 2011.
While the fielding was pure across the board from the Indians, with even world-class fielders like Ravindra Jadeja dropping catches, the biggest culprit in this regard was Yashasvi Jaiswal, who dropped four. Jaiswal cost his team 165 runs with his fielding, as the players he dropped went on to make this many runs after he dropped them.
Suffice it to say, India’s dismal fielding was a massive point of contention with critics and fans following the first Test. Now, former Australian cricketer Brad Haddin has dished out some advice for team captain Shubman Gill on how to improve their fielding.
In a recent appearance on the LiSTNR Sport podcast, Haddin had the solution for the Indian Cricket Team’s buttery fingers problem, saying,

“If you want to field well and compete the whole time, it’s only attitude. You can do all your technical work off the field and have as many coaches as anyone, but it won’t matter. Even in the IPL this year, the catching was horrible. And that could be a byproduct. “The one thing I would say to India is find a way to be the best fielding team in the world because you have the talent everywhere else.”
The 47-year-old then gave an example of how, even in the IPL, much focus is put on how good a player is in their particular skill and not on how good they are as a fielder.
“Take the young kid [Vaibhav Suryavanshi] from Rajasthan, for example. Everyone is talking about how well he batted, and it was unbelievable. But if you’re going to be a great player, he’s got to work on his fielding, his presence in the game,” he said.
The second India vs England Test, as stated before, will be played at Edgbaston. This will be a crucial game for India if they are to stay alive in this series. It will also be a massive game for captain Shubman Gill, who would want to lead India to a victory in his first-ever series as a Test captain.
