With a five-fer from Bumrah, England is bowled out for 387

Jasprit Bumrah pulled up his 13th five-fer in away Tests, the most by an Indian bowler but fifties from Brydon Carse and Jamie Smith took England to 387 in their first innings at Lord’s on Day 2. After four years away from Test cricket, Jofra Archer dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal in his opening over, but a resolute KL Rahul and Karun Nair led India to tea at 44 for 1.

Mohammed Siraj got one to sneak away that found the outside edge of the ‘keeper-batter, ending the 84-run partnership between Smith and Carse after a tedious eighth-wicket stand. Siraj challenged Archer with both bats and bats, while Carse increased the ante with a pair of boundaries off Bumrah. Bumrah’s first five-fer at Lord’s came when he dismissed Archer, earning him his fifth of the innings. To the chagrin of Siraj, who was sandwiched by a six down the ground as the all-rounder reached his fifty, Carse was dropped twice in an over.

Siraj’s harmless delivery went for five wides on the legside as the Indians’ play began to turn sloppy. However, the innings ended at 387 when Carse was bowled off a yorker, giving the bowler his wish at last.

In response, Jaiswal graciously provided three boundaries after Chris Woakes supplied several loosers in his first over. But Archer didn’t waste any time, taking the southpaw off the third ball in his first over. Jaiswal poked at the speedster to get it to curve away from the left-hander, but it wound up poking Harry Brook in the slip-cauldron instead.

Nair survived some snorters and was defeated on the outside edge during a trying period of play against a fiery Archer. Comparatively speaking, Woakes’ first stint was subpar; he let up 23 runs in his opening four overs and had a few errant lines. In order to keep the scoreboard going, Rahul appeared more at ease gently tapping the ball offside and taking singles. He was also a strong defender, which helped India get to tea even better.

England had earlier mounted a valiant comeback after coming dangerously close to being bowled for less than 300 in the opening session. Bumrah destroyed the English batting order after Joe Root reached his eighth century at Lord’s, taking out Ben Stokes, Root, and Woakes in two overs. Rahul dropped Smith off a regulation chance in the slips, and the batsman-wicketkeeper took full advantage of his reprieve. England also benefited from an unexpected ball change by India, which was moving around after only 10.4 overs.

After battling through a difficult stretch of play, Smith and Carse had the runs flowing swiftly and hardly gave India a chance. On the stroke of lunch, the ‘keeper-batter reached his 50th century with a single after playing a fluid extra-cover drive.

Brief Scores: India 44/1 (Karun Nair 18*, KL Rahul 13*; Jofra Archer 1-16) trail England 352/7 (Joe Root 104, Jamie Smith 51*; Jasprit Bumrah 4-63, Nitish Kumar Reddy 2-62) by 343 runs
