England Squad for Womens World Cup 2025: England have named a 15-strong squad for the Women’s World Cup beginning in India on September 30, and it is both a renewal and a reprise. Nat Sciver-Brunt, elevated to the all-format captaincy earlier this year, will take charge of her first ICC event. Heather Knight, her predecessor, returns from a hamstring tendon injury that has cost her much of 2025, her recall a reminder of how indispensable her experience remains.
As the tournament occurs in India, the squad is heavily spin dominant. Sophie Ecclestone, ranked No.1 among ODI bowlers, heads a quartet that also includes Charlie Dean, Linsey Smith and the recalled Sarah Glenn, absent against India earlier this summer. In all, six players will be attending their maiden one-day World Cup.
There is also place for familiarity. Tammy Beaumont, Sophia Dunkley and Amy Jones retain their spots, while Danni Wyatt-Hodge, left out of the India series, reappears in recognition of her domestic form and batting versatility. Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier and Alice Davidson-Richards are the casualties of the selectors’ recalibration, squeezed out by the need for an extra spinner.
“This is the stage that comes around only once in four years,” Edwards said. “It’s the pinnacle of our sport, and I’m delighted for those named. Selection always involves disappointment, but with Heather and Danni back, and the balance we’ve tried to achieve, I believe we can compete with anyone in these conditions.”
The tournament will be Sciver-Brunt’s first as leader, though not her first as central figure. For nearly a decade she has been England’s premier all-rounder; now she assumes the burden of command, with Knight alongside as ballast. It is not quite a new era, but a moment of generational adjustment.
England’s pedigree in the competition is considerable: four titles, beginning with the inaugural 1973 event, most recently in 2017 at Lord’s. But there has been a lean spell since, marked by a semi-final exit in 2022 and an Ashes campaign that yielded more headaches than hope. In India they begin against South Africa on October 3 in Bengaluru, with expectations of another tilt at the summit, though the landscape is less forgiving than before.
