I’ve been producing written documents on computers since 1998. In that time, I’ve used a range of different Microsoft applications, including Notepad, WordPad, and of course, Word. Forgive me, Apple fans. In recent years, I’ve transitioned over to using Google Docs and have enjoyed working in the cloud. Docs has helped me keep all my work organized and let me share what I create with others. As a writer, this has become the tool that I use day in and day out.

Despite all this love, one thing that I don’t like about Google’s offering is the lack of creative flair and formatting that I can put into my work. If you’ve ever tried inserting an image or drawing into a document, then you’ll understand my pain. I therefore thought it was high time that I explored alternative options, which led me to the Bear app.

Available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, Bear is a tidy little tool that has brought a wave of fresh creativity to my writing endeavors. From the outset, I was keen to see if it could or should replace Google Docs in my writing workflow. That meant creating a document from scratch with headings, copy, images, footnotes, and more.
