Ampere Nexus Becomes First EV to Conquer Shipki La Pass in a Historic Independence Day Expedition

In a historic feat coinciding with India’s 79th Independence Day, two Ampere Nexus electric scooters etched their names in the record books by becoming the first electric vehicles to reach the formidable Shipki La Pass — a strategic Himalayan route situated at a staggering 13,200 ft above sea level, just 200 meters from the Line of Control (LoC).

The 425+ km expedition, flagged off from Chandigarh, was not just a test of endurance but also a demonstration of the technological strength of Indian electric mobility in extreme conditions. This remarkable journey was undertaken in collaboration with the Indian Army’s Tripeak Brigade, as part of the Border Tourism Initiative, aimed at promoting tourism in sensitive frontier areas while showcasing the reliability of homegrown EV technology.

A Ride Through the Rugged Himalayas

The route was anything but easy. The Ampere Nexus duo navigated:

  • Rugged, winding mountain roads
  • Steep climbs through Shimla and Reckong Peo
  • The remote Kinnaur Valley, where civilization gives way to the raw beauty of nature and the imposing presence of the high Himalayas

Each kilometer tested the limits of man and machine, with fluctuating temperatures, challenging terrain, and reduced oxygen levels. Yet, the Nexus scooters performed with unwavering consistency, proving that EVs can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with conventional vehicles in even the harshest environments.

The expedition culminated in a flag-hoisting ceremony at the summit, where Indian Army jawans and the expedition team stood together in a moment charged with patriotism.

Engineering Built for India

The Ampere Nexus is a product of Greaves Electric Mobility, the e-mobility arm of Greaves Cotton Limited — a company with a 165-year legacy in engineering excellence. Designed specifically for the diverse and demanding Indian terrain, the Nexus has already proven its mettle earlier this year with a Kashmir-to-Kanyakumari ride during its launch phase.

By conquering Shipki La, the Nexus has further solidified its reputation for:

  • Durability in extreme climates
  • Consistent performance on steep gradients
  • Adaptability to unpredictable road conditions

More Than a Ride — A Statement

This achievement goes beyond just a record-setting drive. It is a powerful message that India’s EV revolution is not limited to city streets or short commutes. With innovation, strategic partnerships, and unwavering commitment, Indian EVs are ready to lead even at the nation’s highest and most challenging frontiers.

The Ampere Nexus’ Himalayan conquest is a perfect blend of sustainability, cutting-edge technology, and patriotic spirit, marking another milestone in the country’s journey toward clean mobility.

As the tricolor fluttered high at Shipki La on Independence Day, it wasn’t just a celebration of freedom — it was a sign that India’s clean energy ambitions are scaling new heights, quite literally.
