Former Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Shaktikanta Das will serve as the Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with effect from the date he assumes office, as announced by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Saturday.
“His appointment will be co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said the order by ACC, Department of Personnel and Training.
Retired IAS officer PK Mishra from the Gujarat cadre currently holds the position of Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.
Shaktikanta Das, 67, demitted office of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as its Governor on December 10, 2024, after serving for six years, making him the second-longest serving RBI Governor.
A 1980 batch IAS officer, served as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue and Department of Economic Affairs. Post-retirement, he was appointed as a Member of the 15th Finance Commission and G20 Sherpa of India.
During his extensive tenure at the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, Shaktikanta Das played a key role in drafting eight Union Budgets. He also served as India’s Alternate Governor at global financial institutions, including the World Bank, ADB, NDB, and AIIB, representing the country in forums like the IMF, G20, BRICS, and SAARC.
A postgraduate from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, Das brings vast experience in economic policymaking and global financial diplomacy.
