Virat Kohli Team Politics Struggles: AB de Villiers Reveals Chat: Virat Kohli may not have spoken to AB de Villiers for months, but when he did, it was not only to mend a friendship but also to seek perspective during a difficult phase in his career.
In an interview with Cricket.com, former South Africa captain de Villiers confirmed that Kohli contacted him during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, following a period of personal silence after a public slip-up. De Villiers had inadvertently revealed that Kohli and Anushka Sharma were expecting their second child, a development the couple had kept private.
“So I was very relieved when he started talking to me again,” de Villiers admitted.
Yet the conversation wasn’t merely about reconciliation.

“He’s been in touch with me over the last six months,” de Villiers said. “So he was talking about… We all know he went through a bit of a patch and sort of wanted to bounce a few ideas off me — how did I get through certain moments of my life.”

It was, de Villiers suggested, not only a search for form but for clarity amid a changing team environment.
“I knew what kind of phase he was going through, considering his age, how many games he’s played, the dynamics of being in the team all the time, the politics thereof as well,” he said. “Lots of things weigh in on you.”
The remarks offer a rare insight into the internal pressures even the most successful players face in the final stages of their international careers. Kohli, who recently stepped away from Test cricket, appears to have taken that decision with introspection, not impulse.
“And I shared with him from the heart what I felt and what I think, what I’m seeing from the side, watching him on the screen,” de Villiers said. “So very happy that he’s still around playing cricket. And the decision to not play Test cricket would have come from the heart.”
Despite the silence that preceded it, the relationship now seems intact. De Villiers expressed strong support for Kohli’s future.
“And I support him 100% with that. He’s had a wonderful career, and I want him to enjoy his cricket until the very last ball. And if that is the way forward for him, then great, I’m right behind him. Hopefully, a lot more white-ball cricket for him left,” he said.
