Van Nistelrooy Sacked As Leicester Manager: English football club Leicester City announced earlier today that they have terminated the contract of manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, firing the legendary Manchester United player from his role after the side underwent a dismal season.

Nistelrooy, who was one of the greatest PL strikers of the 2000s, had started his managerial career in his home country of the Netherlands by coaching junior teams. His first big gig came as the manager of PSV, where he won two cup trophies. He was then appointed the interim manager of Manchester United in November after Erik Ten Hag was sacked and oversaw a brief resurgence in form.

On November 29, he was appointed as the full-time manager of Leicester City. This was after the club sacked Steve Cooper, under whom the Foxes were reeling at 16th in the Premier League after 12 matchdays. Cooper managed the club for 15 games, of which he won three, drew five, and lost seven.

Nistelrooy’s hiring came with a lot of excitement. A legend of the league, who had impressed with his first managerial assignment at PSV, was returning to England to save a former champion club from relegation.

While Leicester City lost their first match under Ruud, 4-1 to Brentford, the Dutch legend had not completely taken over his duties by then. The first match they played under him at home was on December 3 against a strong West Ham side, which Leicester won 3-1, followed by a 2-2 draw with Brighton.

But this is where the honeymoon phase ended, as the club from the Midlands went on a seven-game losing streak in the Premier League.

At the end of the 2024-25 season, rather than taking the club on an upward trajectory, Ruud had sunk the team to 18th on the table, which means relegation for a second time in three seasons for the former PL champions.

Under Ruud van Nistelrooy, Leicester played 29 matches across all competitions, winning only five. In the 27 games he managed Leicester in, they only scored 17 goals, which is two fewer than he scored as a player in his first Premier League season in 2001-02 for the Red Devils.

With such performances, it came as no surprise when Ruud van Nistelrooy was sacked as the manager of Leicester City. It now remains to be seen who will be his successor at the club and manage them in the EFL Championship.
