Several key automakers will foray into the strong hybrid segment with the introduction of their SUV models in the next 8-12 months in India

In the last year or so, we have seen several leading auto brands drifting towards hybrid tech instead of introducing fully-electric models. The reasons behind this are cited to be lower investment cost, higher practicality and elimination of range anxiety which comes with EVs. Hence, in the coming 8-12 months, we will witness the launch of at least 6 hybrid SUVs in the Indian market. In this article, we will talk in detail about the upcoming hybrid SUV models in 2025-26 in India.

1. Maruti Escudo

New-Gen Grand Vitara

Codenamed as Maruti Y17, it will be launched on Sep 3 in the domestic market in India. The new midsize Maruti SUV will be retailed through the Arena dealerships while based largely on the Grand Vitara. Maruti Escudo will come with the same engine choices as the Grand Vitara which includes the 1.5L K15C petrol, 1.5L Atkinson strong hybrid and petrol-CNG versions. The Escudo will directly rival the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in India.

Mahindra & Mahindra is all set to tap into the hybrid arena with the XUV 3XO. The Mumbai-based brand recently showcased the Vision X concept and it is likely to spawn the new-gen XUV 3XO SUV with ICE, electric and hybrid engine options. Underpinning the NU_IQ platform, it is expected to launch in 2026 in the Indian market. Mahindra is also working on the range extender hybrid models for the INGLO architecture and the XUV 3XO hybrid is codenamed as S226.

3. Renault Duster Hybrid

Dacia Duster

Renault Duster will make a comeback in India in 2026, albeit with a hybrid powertrain. Based on the CMF-B platform, it will be the first Renault model in the Indian market to come with strong hybrid tech. The global-spec Renault Duster hybrid gets a 1.6L 4-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors and 1.2 kWh battery pack. This setup is paired with an automatic transmission. It remains to be seen whether this setup makes its way to India or Renault has some other plans for our country.

Honda is planning to extend the strong hybrid tech of City sedan to multiple other models, beginning with the Elevate SUV. It has been learnt that Honda Elevate hybrid will launch in the second half of 2026 in India. Honda will locally develop the hybrid SUV at its Tapukara facility in Rajasthan on a new assembly line. If the Japanese brand opts for the same strong hybrid powertrain for the Elevate as seen in the City, it could have a mileage of over 25 kmpl.

The Fronx facelift will debut Maruti’s self-developed Series hybrid powertrain when it launches by mid 2026 in the Indian market. It is likely to be available with the 1.2L 3-cylinder Z12E petrol engine, electric motors and a 1.5-2 kWh battery pack. In this setup, the petrol engine will work as a generator to charge the battery pack which in turn will transmit power to the electric motor to drive the wheels. The 2026 Maruti Fronx hybrid could have a mileage of 35-40 kmpl.

Essentially the rebadged version of the upcoming Renault Duster hybrid, the new Nissan hybrid SUV will be based on the same CMF-B platform. Though it will come with unique styling in order to maintain its individuality, the powertrains will be shared with the Duster. We have learnt that it will be more rich in features than the Duster and it could be christened as Nissan Kait when it finally launches in 2026 in the country.
