Post the strict mandate of the Union Govt, several leading automakers such as Hyundai, Maruti and Mahindra have standardized basic safety features like airbags, ABS with EBD, and 3-point seatbelts among others across their entire model line-up.
In fact, except for some small cars, we can see 6 airbags as a standard safety feature in most of the vehicles. The Bharat NCAP has also been formed for conducting crash tests and providing safety ratings to cars on the basis of their performance. In this piece, we will talk about the top 10 safest cars in India with respect to the points scored in Global NCAP crash tests.
1&2.Tata Harrier and Tata Safari

The SUV duo of Harrier and Safari have been adjudicated as the safest cars in India by Global NCAP. Both the SUVs had an exceptional score of 33.05 out of 34 for adult protection and 45 out of 49 for the child occupant protection. Hence, the duo had an overall score of 74.72 out of 83, which made them the safest cars in India among the numerous models sold by the various automakers. Needless to state, Global NCAP awarded the highest 5-star safety rating to both these SUVs.

3. Tata Nexon

Tata Nexon, akin to its elder sibling duo of Harrier and Safari, has scored handsomely in the crash tests conducted by Global NCAP. While the SUV scored 32.22 points out of 34 for adult protection, the child occupant protection score was 44.52 out of 49. In all, it managed to score 76.76 points out of the total of 83 and thus becoming the second most safe model on sale in the Indian market.
4. Maruti Victoris

Maruti’s latest SUV model Victoris has bagged the highest 5-star safety rating in the Global NCAP crash tests with scores of 33.72 points out of 34 in adult safety and 41 points out of 49 in child occupant protection. It is the safest Maruti SUV till date in India with an overall score of 74.72 out of 83. The Dzire has also been awarded the highest 5-star safety rating by Global NCAP, albeit with a lesser score in both adult and child occupant protection.
5&6. Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia

Both the sedans share everything including the body structure, safety features and the materials used in their manufacturing. It’s just that they have different badging as the Virtus flaunts VW emblem, the Slavia represents Skoda. Hence, needless to state, both the models have received identical scores of 29.71 out of 34 and 42 out of 49 from Global NCAP. With a total score of 71.71 out of 83, the sedan duo of VW Virtus and Skoda Slavia are the safest sedans in India.

7&8. Volkswagen Taigun & Skoda Kushaq

These SUVs have a similar agreement as the Virtus and Slavia with everything in common, except for the badging. Built on the same architecture as the Virtus/Slavia, the VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq get the topmost 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP in both adult and child protection with scores of 29.64 out of 34 and 42 out of 49, respectively. Both the SUVs are packed with a plethora of premium safety features as standard fitment.
9. Hyundai Verna

It became the first Hyundai car last year to achieve the highest 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP. The sedan scored heavily in child occupant protection and had an even better score than Maruti Victoris with 42 points out of 49. However, it didn’t perform as well in the adult safety and had to remain content with a score of 28.18 out of 34, thus taking the total to 70.18 out of 83. Nonetheless, it became the safest Hyundai car in India till date.
10. Maruti Dzire

Last but not the least in the list is Maruti Suzuki Dzire as it is the only compact sedan to come with the highest 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP. It scored 5-stars in adult safety with a score of 31.24 out of 34 while the performance in child occupant protection was a tad disappointing with 4-star rating and score of 39.20 out of 49. It scored a total of 70.44 out of 83 and thus became the safest sub 4 metre sedan in India.
