Maruti Swift hatch

The table of top 10 hatchbacks in September 2025 saw Maruti Suzuki Swift moving up to top ahead ahead of its siblings WagonR and Baleno

Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the hatchback sales standings in September 2025. While some of he popular offerings recorded impressive numbers, others did post YoY sales decline despite the arrival of the festive season. The Indo-Japanese brand held its ground while Tata Motors pulled off a rebound with the Tiago and Altroz.

At the top of the table, the Maruti Suzuki Swift sat in its familiar position as India’s highest-selling hatchback – recording 15,547 units in September. However, the figures marked a slight four per cent dip compared to the same month last year. Even with the decline, the Swift’s stronghold indicates its enduring popularity across demographics.

The latest generation has been well received by customers and compared to the previous month, the compact hatchback has moved up a position. Just behind it, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR continued its stellar run – registering 15,388 units and clocking a healthy 15 per cent growth over last year’s tally of 13,339 units.

Its space-efficient design, frugal engine and resale value have kept it a family favourite across the country. The Baleno followed next with 13,173 units – witnessing an 8 per cent year-on-year drop. While demand has softened slightly, it remains one of the most feature-rich hatchbacks in the premium space.

The biggest story of the month came from Tata Motors. The Tiago saw a dramatic 97 per cent jump in sales – climbing from 4,225 units last year to 8,322 this September. This surge can be attributed to the growing popularity of its electric version and Tata’s emphasis on safety as well as its VFM proposition in the compact hatch space.

The Altroz too saw impressive traction with a 51 per cent rise to 4,168 units as the timely arrival of the mid-life facelift has worked in its favour this festive period. On the other hand, the once-dominant Maruti Suzuki Alto continued its downward slide – falling 37 per cent year-on-year to 5,434 units last month.

Elsewhere, the Toyota Glanza posted steady numbers with a 2 per cent uptick to 3,299 units. Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios and i20, however, saw drops of 17 and 12 per cent respectively while the Maruti S-Presso, despite being the most affordable car in India, closed the list with a modest 4 per cent gain at 1,774 units.
