In August 2025 sales charts for top 10 hatchbacks, Maruti Suzuki WagonR finished on top ahead of Baleno, Swift, Alto, Tiago and Glanza
The month of August 2025 showed that while Maruti still dominates, the battle for attention is getting fiercer in the Indian hatchback space. The WagonR retained its pole position with 14,552 units sold but the 12 per cent drop from last year signals that buyers are opting for slightly more premium or feature-rich options.
It is still the go-to for those who prize simplicity and dependability and the arrival of GST 2.0 price reductions and additional benefits during festive season should pump up demand across the segment. The Baleno proved its staying power nudging past last year’s numbers by a hair to 12,549 units as it moved up to second compared to previous month.
Meanwhile, the Swift, the segment’s stalwart, fell slightly to 12,385 units – down 4 per cent showing that even tried-and-true favourites are feeling the heat. The Maruti Suzuki Alto’s steep 35 per cent decline to 5,520 units gives a clear view of evolving preferences at the entry-level segment but as previously mentioned, the demand is expected to heat up.

Budget-conscious buyers are no longer just chasing the lowest price, they want more features, more space and good design. Maruti may need to rethink its approach here if it wants the Alto to stay relevant in the next few years. Tata’s hatchbacks, on the other hand, continue to carve out a strong narrative.
The Tiago’s 11 per cent rise to 5,250 units and Altroz’s 31 per cent jump to 3,959 units show their consistency. Toyota Glanza quietly grows its presence – reaching 5,102 units as its sales were increased by 10 per cent from last year. The entry point to Toyota’s domestic range along with its rebadged siblings has performed well in recent times.

Hyundai is facing tough questions. The Grand i10 Nios and i20 sales fell 27 per cent and 26 per cent respectively indicating the steady pressure from Maruti Suzuki and Tata. The numbers suggest buyers are gravitating toward practical and affordable options in the compact SUV segment which can be said for a few other models too.
At the bottom of the top 10, Ignis sold 2,097 units – down 15 per cent. The remaining months of this CY are crucial to gaining volumes due to the positive buying sentiments that generally prevail amongst customers.
