Hyundai Motor India Limited has entered a new era as Tarun Garg formally assumes charge as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer with effect from January 1, 2026. The appointment is historic as it indicates the first time in the company’s 29-year journey that an Indian national has taken over the top leadership role.
With more than 32 years of experience across the automotive sector, Garg brings deep expertise spanning sales, marketing, distribution, financial management, brand building and product strategy. His elevation comes at a time when the Indian auto industry is in the middle of a swift transformation – led by electrification, connected technologies and ever changing consumer expectations.
Hyundai Motor Group’s decision shows mighty confidence in India’s growth story and Garg’s proven ability to steer complex organisations through change. Under his stewardship, HMIL will accelerate its transition towards future-ready mobility solutions while consolidating its strengths in quality, reliability and customer trust. A Rs. 45,000 crore investment roadmap running up to FY2030 will anchor the next phase of expansion.

Tarun Garg, MD & CEO – HMIL spoke on his appointment, “My vision is to build on our strong foundation while accelerating HMIL’s transformation towards sustainable growth, technological leadership, and unmatched customer delight. With a strong academic background as a mechanical engineer from Delhi Technological University and an MBA from IIM Lucknow, he combines technical depth with strategic acumen. During his tenure as Head of Sales, Service and Marketing and later as Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, the company recorded three consecutive years of record sales – achieved its highest-ever profitability and EBITDA margins and successfully executed India’s largest-ever IPO in 2024.
