Budget-priced Kylaq comes to the rescue for Skoda in August, while Volkswagen, with no sub-4 metre car in its line-up, reports a substantial decline in sales
August 2025 was quite a challenging month for the Indian auto industry, with customers postponing purchases in anticipation of the recently announced GST rate cuts. Volkswagen Group’s core brands, Skoda and Volkswagen, were no exception.
Skoda was among the very few car brands that managed to grow its sales in August 2025. Interestingly, among the mass-market brands, it posted the highest year-over-year growth – 79%. That said, in an absolute sense, the Czech automaker is still a minuscule player in the Indian car market. It sold 4,971 cars in our market last month, compared to just 2,772 units in August 2024.
If it were not for the Kylaq, which Skoda began delivering in January, the company would have logged a big decline in sales last month. For the record, it sold 3,099 units of the sub-4 metre SUV. Its other locally manufactured models were both in the red, with the Kushaq posting a 47% year-over-year decline and the Slavia 10%. The company sold just 789 units of the SUV and 1,008 units of the sedan, as opposed to 1,502 and 1,122 units in the same month last year.

The recently launched second-gen Kodiaq, which is substantially more expensive than the previous generation model, wasn’t doing well to begin with, and its position worsened in August. Skoda delivered just 75 units of the latest model last month, as opposed to 145 units of the first-gen model in the same month last year. This translated to a 48% year-over-year decline.
The third-gen Superb, which used to be a pricey CBU import and saw just three takers in August 2024, is no longer on sale. The fourth-gen model is in the pipeline, also planned as a CBU import, but it is unlikely to arrive in showrooms until next year, as Skoda waits for a potential tariff reduction when the India-EU FTA is announced in the coming months.

At Volkswagen, the Taigun and Virtus saw a year-over-year sales decline of 39% and 11%, respectively, in August 2025. The company delivered just 1,001 units of the SUV and 1,674 units of the sedan, respectively, as opposed to 1,628 and 1,876 units, respectively, in the same month last year.

As for the Tiguan, its locally assembled second-gen model sold in August 2024 was replaced with a fully imported third-gen model this year. The priciness resulting from this change brought its sales down from 73 units to just 8 units, marking a steep 89% year-over-year decline.

Lastly, the Golf, launched exclusively in the GTI variant this year, contributed 36 units to Volkswagen’s sales last month. In total, Volkswagen delivered 2,719 cars in India in August 2025, 24% less than in the same month last year (3,577 units).
