Shubman Gill Becomes First Indian Captain: #ENGvIND Test

Shubman Gill Becomes First Indian Captain: Shubman Gill came into this series with the huge weight of being India’s Test captain at the age of only 25. That was further accentuated by his taking the No. 4 position, vacated by Virat Kohli, who had taken over from Sachin Tendulkar.

To make matters heavier for him, Gill’s record outside Asia and the West Indies was dismal heading into this series.

However, against so many odds, the young right-hander has proven his class as a batsman and also that he hasn’t gotten burdened by the responsibility of captaincy in Test cricket.

After a smooth century in the first Test in Leeds, Shubman Gill produced another three-figure score in the second Test of the series at Edgbaston. But, unlike Leeds, where he was dismissed for 147 and failed to bat England out of the game, at Edgbaston, Gill has converted his century into a double century, the first of his career, and also made a massive record that no player in India’s history of Test cricket has ever touched.

India played their inaugural Test match in 1932 against England in England. Now, Shubman Gill has broken the barrier of the 200-run mark that no Indian skipper before him had done in England.

At Edgbaston, Shubman Gill became the first Indian captain to hit a double hundred in England in Test cricket. He had already broken Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of the highest score by an Indian skipper in England in Tests of 179 from the 1990 tour.

Virat Kohli’s highest score in England as a skipper is 149, which he made at Edgbaston in 2018.

Meanwhile, the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket is 254*, made by Virat Kohli against South Africa in Pune in 2019.

Gill, who is currently batting on 222*, has entered the top five highest scores by an Indian captain in Test cricket.

India are in a solid position at Edgbaston. At the time of writing, the visitors are 496/6, with Gill batting on 222* and partnering him is Washington Sundar on 23*. Earlier, Gill and Jadeja had a double-hundred partnership, with the left-hander scoring 89.
