Maruti Suzuki e Vitara

The e-Vitara, Maruti Suzuki’s first electric SUV, will begin exports to 100 countries ahead of its launch in India

PM Narendra Modi will flag off Maruti Suzuki’s first electric vehicle, the e-Vitara, on Aug 26 at the brand’s Hansalpur facility in Gujarat. Needless to mention, the made-in-India Maruti e-Vitara will be exported to over 100 countries, including Japan. It is likely to launch in India in the first quarter of 2026 to rival Hyundai Creta EV and MG ZS EV.

In addition, PM Modi will also inaugurate localized production of hybrid battery electrodes at TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Plant during his 2-day visit to Gujarat. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the assembly line for Maruti e-Vitara at the Hansalpur factory near Ahmedabad, which will also mark the beginning of series production of the electric SUV. With this, India is poised to become the global manufacturing hub of EVs for Suzuki.

“In a major example of the success of Make in India, the Prime Minister will inaugurate and flag off the “e VITARA”, Suzuki’s first global strategic Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). The Made-in-India BEVs will be exported to more than one hundred countries, including advanced markets such as Europe and Japan. With this milestone, India will now serve as Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles,” read an official statement from the Prime Minister’s office.

Maruti e-Vitara had its public premiere at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo earlier this year in New Delhi. It has been almost 7-8 months since the all-electric SUV was showcased in production-ready form but for some reason best known to Maruti Suzuki, it has not gone on sale in the Indian market yet. It appears that the e-Vitara, before its launch in India, will be introduced in global markets such as Europe and Japan.

Based on an all-new EV platform namely Heartect-e, Maruti e-Vitara rides on 18-inch alloy wheels while the cabin is equipped with some of the most advanced and premium features in the form of LED projector headlamps, 10-way power adjustable driver seat, sunroof, 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster, sliding and reclining rear seats, 7-airbags, Level 2 ADAS, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and Suzuki Connect among others.

Coming to the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Plant, it is jointly owned by Toshiba, Denso and Suzuki for local production of hybrid battery electrodes. PM Modi will visit this facility to inaugurate the next phase of India’s battery ecosystem. With this, over 80 percent of the battery pack, used in electric vehicles (EVs), will now be manufactured in India, thus giving a massive boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

“Taking large strides towards becoming Aatmanirbhar in the field of green energy, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the next phase of India’s battery ecosystem with the start of local production of hybrid battery electrodes at TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant in Gujarat. The plant, a joint venture of Toshiba, Denso and Suzuki, will boost domestic manufacturing and clean energy innovation. This development ensures that more than eighty percent of the battery value will now be manufactured within India,” read the official statement from PIB India.
