New gen Toyota RAV4 PHEV’s combined output climbs to a punchy 324 horsepower which is backed by an improved 84 km all-electric range

Toyota’s best-selling SUV is back with an all-new identity in the global markets and it made its world debut in May 2025. For a model that’s already clocked over 6.4 million sales since 1996, the 2026 iteration is a statement of intent as it gets big changes inside and out. It will go on sale in the United States in the coming months.

Every variant of the new RAV4 comes as either a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid with the latter debuting a new sixth-gen powertrain. The PHEV’s combined output climbs to a punchy 324 horsepower which is backed by an improved 84 km all-electric range – a 23 per cent boost over the outgoing model. The regular hybrid models delivering up to 18.7 kmpl and 236 horsepower on AWD variants.

Visually, Toyota has given the RAV4 a muscular and busier stance than before. The hammerhead-inspired front fascia, muscular wheel arches and sculpted fenders give it a serious SUV attitude while the chiseled tail section and new LED signature lighting make it look more premium than ever. Depending on the grade, buyers can opt for the clean “core” look, the rugged Woodland edition or the all-new GR Sport variant.

The latter developed in collaboration with Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division. On the inside, the redesigned cockpit now features a floating 12.3-inch digital cluster and a wide 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen supported by the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system with onboard 5G connectivity. The new layout groups essential controls within reach while improved materials and ambient lighting are other highlights.

Even the seats have been reshaped with colour and texture options matching each trim’s personality. Underneath, Toyota’s TNGA-K platform has been extensively reworked for better stiffness. A recalibrated suspension setup, improved cabin sealing and aerodynamic tweaks collectively make the RAV4 more composed and responsive according to the brand.

The electronically controlled brake and steering systems are brand new as well. Perhaps the biggest headline-grabber is the first-ever RAV4 GR Sport. With its GR-tuned suspension, lower ride height and aggressive aero detailing, this is the most performance-focused RAV4 ever built straight out of factory.

Exclusive design elements including red brake callipers, wider fenders and unique GR badging give it a distinction. Inside, suede sport seats and red stitching are provided too. Manufactured across facilities in the US, Canada and Japan, the new RAV4 is all set to arrive in dealerships from December 2025 with prices starting in the low USD 30,000s (Rs. 26.3 lakh approximately).
