Mitchell Hay grew up in Christchurch and went to Christchurch Boys’ High School. He played his early cricket at Burnside West University Cricket Club and came through the Canterbury system. His family has played an important role in his life. His parents did not play cricket, but they were very supportive and involved in sport. His father is named Peter, and his older brother, Matt, has been a big influence and motivation for him. He has always been a wicketkeeper-batsman and has loved wicketkeeping since childhood. He tried leg-spin bowling when he was younger but did not continue with it. Mitchell missed out on the New Zealand Under-19 team but feels he achieved most other steps on the pathway to international cricket.
