Maruti Suzuki is likely to launch the Wagon R as its first flex-fuel vehicle in the coming months in the Indian market
Maruti Suzuki will start producing flex-fuel vehicle in the coming months in the domestic market, announced its parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) during a technology strategy update. The commencement of production of flex-fuel vehicles in the ongoing fiscal is a part of the brand’s long-term vision of achieving carbon neutrality in the Indian market. For the unversed, flex-fuel vehicles are seen as cleaner alternative to traditional petrol engines as they run on various fuel blends including ethanol.
Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) stated in a regulatory filing that the flex-fuel vehicles are being developed and they will be launched in the market within this finanical year. “Suzuki will continue to advance its biogas business in step with India’s robust growth, working toward the realisation of a carbon-neutral society,” the company said.
Suzuki further shared that one of its key missions in the carbon neutrality journey in India is biogas business. Hence, the company is actively engaging with dairy cooperatives to establish production factories of biogas which are likely to begin operation from the end of 2025. These biogas plants will convert manure from India’s 300 million cattle into biogas, which is considered as an organic fertiliser and carbon neutral fuel.

The biogas produced in these plants will be used in the CNG-powered vehicles of Maruti Suzuki, which are already in high demand due to better mileage, higher fuel price and cleaner mobility. In fact, nearly one in three cars retailed by Maruti Suzuki is a CNG model. SMC is of the view that the biogas initiative not only helps in achieving clean energy targets in India but also increase the incomes of farmers in rural areas by purchasing cowdung from them.
Maruti Suzuki’s entire model line-up is compatible with E20 fuel. Now, the automaker has shifted focus on the production of flex-fuel vehicles which can support up to 85 percent of bioethanol. The company had showcased a flex-fuel ready prototype of Wagon R hatchback at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January.

Maruti Wagon R flex-fuel vehicle was presented as the brand’s first flex-fuel vehicle which can run on any petrol-ethanol blended fuel, ranging from E20 (20 percent ethanol) to E85 (85 percent ethanol). Visually, the prototype was identical to the current model of the hatchback with similar features and technical specs. Maruti Suzuki claims that Wagon R flex fuel will reduce tailpipe emissions by 79 percent while running on E85 fuel.
Despite having such low tail-pipe emissions, the performance will not be compromised and the hatch will deliver same power as the standard petrol-only model. It is quite apparent that the Wagon R will be the first flex fuel vehicle from Maruti Suzuki while launching in the first quarter of CY 2026.
