JSW Group’s ambitions in India extend beyond its joint venture with SAIC Motor, but remain dependent on Chinese partners
JSW Group’s new independent passenger car company, JSW Motors Limited, will launch its first model in June, as per a fresh report from Moneycontrol. This model will be a plug-in hybrid SUV, expected to cost around 45 lakh rupees.
The first JSW model will be a rebadged version of a D-segment SUV from Chinese conglomerate Chery’s Jetour brand, called T2, Autocar India said in a separate report later. The Jetour T2 measures 4,785 mm in length, 2,006 mm in width, and 1,875 mm in height and has a 2,800 mm wheelbase.
Jetour markets the T2 as an off-road SUV and has designed it to look like one, and this means JSW could position the rebadged version as a Toyota Fortuner rival in India. The T2 offers a 205 mm ground clearance, 28º approach angle, 30º departure angle, and 700 mm water wading depth.

In China, Jetour sells the T2 plug-in hybrid in three configurations. The base variant employs a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 115 kW (154 hp) and 220 Nm of torque and two motors that generate 165 kW (221 hp) of combined power and 390 Nm of combined torque. It has a 27.2 kWh LFP battery pack made by Gotion High-Tech, which delivers a pure electric range of 100 kilometres, as per WLTC.
The middle variant features the same powertrain, but upgrades to a CATL-made 43.24 kWh LFP battery pack, which increases the WLTC electric range to 162 kilometres. The top variant uses the same 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine but combines it with a trio of electric motors developing 340 kW (456 hp) of combined power and 700 Nm of combined torque. It carries over the 43.24 kWh LFP battery pack and travels up to 160 kilometres in EV mode, also as per WLTC.

JSW will likely offer only the base variant in India. The company will import knocked-down kits of the T2 plug-in hybrid from Jetour’s plant in Fuzhou (Fujian Province), China, and assemble them at its factory in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Maharashtra). With the launch scheduled in June, we expect the company to release the first details in April.
