Jayden Seales, a bowler for the West Indies, was fined for violating the ICC code of conduct during the current Test match in Delhi versus India. Seales received his second demerit point in a 24-month span, the first occurring in a Test match against Bangladesh in December, in addition to paying a fine equal to 25% of his match fee for the violation.

The incident happened in the 29th over of the Indian innings on the first day of the Test. On his follow-through, Seales fielded the ball and threw it back at Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was hit by the ball as it struck his pads. According to the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, he violated Article 2.9, which prohibits “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”

Seales did, however, challenge the penalty that match referee Andy Pycroft had suggested, necessitating a formal hearing. The 24-year-old acknowledged that he was trying to run out the Indian opener, but the match referee dismissed Seales’ attempts as unwarranted and improper after reviewing video footage.
