Partnering with Valeo, Hero MotoCorp will work on the development of Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS) for its upcoming product line-up

Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, is ready to take a big leap in the safety features for its upcoming two-wheeler range. The company has announced a strategic partnership with Valeo, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS).

Through this collaboration, Hero aims to enhance riders’ safety by using advanced technology for two-wheelers across entry-level and premium segments, along with the emerging electric two-wheeler portfolio under the VIDA nameplate.

The ARAS system will leverage Valeo’s radar and smart camera technologies, with the aim of reducing road accidents and elevating the riding experience of the customers. As per the company, the partnership has already delivered a successful proof-of-concept system, which is designed to protect both riders and pedestrians.

For reference, the ARAS system will be fundamentally similar to the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) seen on the modern mass-market cars. Since the ADAS technology has become quite common in four-wheelers, the ARAS will mark a big step in the safety department of the two-wheeler.

The architecture of the ARAS (Advanced Rider Assistance Systems) is designed to act as a digital co-pilot for the riders, thereby creating a 360-degree safety envelope around the vehicle. Moreover, the system will address the realities of urban traffic, mixed road usage and vulnerable road users. It will use real-time sensing and intelligent alerts, which will be relevant for ICE and electric two-wheelers.

Some of the top highlights of the ARAS system include Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Distance Warning (DW), Blind Spot Detection (BSD) and Rear Collision Warning (RCW). The technology is based on high-resolution cameras, enabling enhanced pedestrian detection, lane detection, traffic sign recognition, and lane departure warning.

The intelligent image processing in the ARAS system allows it to identify road signs and obstacles, even in low-light conditions. This combined technology is meant to work as a safety net for two-wheeler riders. With the ARAS tech, Hero MotoCorp aims to make two-wheeler safety accessible to everyone and set new standards for rider protection in the Indian as well as global markets.
