Dean Ambrose is an American professional wrestler. He has worked with All Elite Wrestling since May 2019, using the name Jon Moxley. He is the current AEW Continental Champion in his first title run after winning the 2025 Continental Classic.
He has also competed in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship once and the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship twice. He received the Pro Wrestling Illustrated award for Most Popular Wrestler of the Year in 2014, 2015, and 2022. Sports Illustrated named him Wrestler of the Year in 2019. In 2020, he was ranked number one in Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s list of the top 500 wrestlers worldwide.
Ambrose began wrestling professionally in 2004 and used the Jon Moxley name on the independent scene, working for promotions such as HWA, wXw, FIP, CZW, and Dragon Gate USA. He joined WWE in 2011 and was renamed Dean Ambrose. He first competed in Florida Championship Wrestling and NXT before joining the main roster in November 2012 as part of The Shield with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.
In May 2013, Ambrose won the WWE United States Championship, holding it for 351 days, which became the longest reign since WWE took control of the title. The Shield broke up in June 2014. After that, he won the WWE Championship once, the Intercontinental Championship three times, and the Raw Tag Team Championship twice with Seth Rollins. These achievements made him WWE’s 27th Triple Crown Champion and 16th Grand Slam Champion. He also won the Money in the Bank ladder match in 2016.
List of Dean Ambrose’s World Championship wins
Ambrose won his first and only WWE World Heavyweight Championship in 2016. In May 2016, he qualified for and won the Money in the Bank ladder match. Later that same night, he cashed in the contract and defeated Seth Rollins to become champion for the first time.
His first title defense against Rollins on July 18, 2016, ended in a draw due to a double pinfall. The next night at the 2016 WWE Draft, Ambrose was drafted first to SmackDown and retained the championship by pinning Rollins.
He successfully defended the title at Battleground by pinning Roman Reigns in a triple threat match that also included Rollins. In August 2016, he defended the renamed WWE World Championship against Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam.
Ambrose lost the championship to AJ Styles at Backlash on September 11, 2016, after interference while the referee was down. He failed to regain the title at No Mercy on October 9, 2016, in a triple threat match involving AJ Styles and John Cena, where Styles pinned Cena.
