BYD Yangwang U9 Track Edition is the world’s first mass-produced 1200V ultra high voltage platform; combined power output of over 3,000 PS

BYD’s Yangwang U9 test car under the Track Edition banner has just hit a new electric vehicle speed record – topping out at 472.41 kmph. That is a big jump from its previous best of 391.94 kmph set last November – marking more than a 20 per cent increase. The latest run makes the U9 China’s fastest car and puts it in the same league as top hyper cars worldwide.

It is a matter of bragging rights for the world’s largest EV maker and is right up there with combustion-engine giants like the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut at 531 kmph, the mighty Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ at 490 kmh and the SSC Tuatara which holds a record of 474.8 kmph. What is eye-catching is the price difference. While those hypercars can cost millions of dollars, the U9 is priced around 1.68 million yuan (Rs. 2.06 crore) — much more accessible for a supercar.

BYD began delivering the U9 last August and has already sold 149 units in a year – making it the first Chinese supercar to surpass 100 deliveries. The first pure electric supercar from Yangwang, in its standard guise, is powered by four electric motors delivering a combined output of just over 1,300 PS and 1,680 Nm of torque. It sprints from 0 to 100 kmph in just 2.36 seconds.

Its top speed is officially stated at 309 kmph. Built on an advanced 800V electrical architecture, the U9 supports ultra-fast charging, capable of replenishing the battery from 30 per cent to 80 per cent within just 10 minutes. The car features an 80 kWh battery pack and BYD’s proprietary “e4” individual wheel drive system and it also boasts an intelligent active suspension system.

It enables body control features including adjustable ride height and even a brief vertical jump. Inside, the U9 offers adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control and multiple airbags along with multi-function steering and a modern infotainment. The U9 Track Edition raises the bar with the world’s first mass-produced 1200V ultra high voltage platform.

Under the hood, it boasts the e4 Platform’s quad motor setup with 30,000 rpm high-performance motors – each delivering around 744 horsepower. Together, they push the combined output beyond 3,000 PS – giving the supercar a staggering power-to-weight ratio of 1,217 PS per tonne, a figure that puts it firmly among the most powerful production cars worldwide.

Beyond raw power, the Track Edition benefits from an advanced independent torque-vectoring system that continually measures road feedback and rapidly adjusts torque at an ultra-high frequency of over 100 times per second. It is said to ensure exceptional grip and stability even at blistering speeds by keeping body posture controlled and eliminating wheel slip.
