Rising competition from homegrown carmakers impacts Hyundai’s performance in 2025, breaking its three-year streak of highest-ever domestic sales
2025 was an average year for Hyundai in India, having sold approximately 7.6 lakh cars. In its first full year of sales since domestic stock exchange listing, the company saw a marginal decline in sales.
Hyundai has not released the annual sales data for 2025, but according to its monthly sales announcements, it sold 7,58,406 cars in India last year. On average, the South Korean automaker was selling about 63,200 cars a month. Compared to 7,64,119 units delivered in 2024, the company’s sales volume declined by 5,713 units or 0.7%.
Domestic sales took a minor hit in 2025, declining by 33,555 units or 5.5%. Compared to 6,05,433 cars shipped in 2024, Hyundai delivered 5,71,878 units last year. Thankfully, export markets came to the rescue and made up for most of the loss in India. Hyundai exported 1,86,528 cars last year, 27,842 units or 17.5% more than in 2024, when the volume stood at 1,58,686 units.

While Hyundai’s sales marginally declined last year, its profits may have improved, as it seems an increasing number of its customers are now going for its premium models. Consider the Creta, for instance, which alone contributed more than two lakh units to its sales last year. This was the highest-ever annual sales the company recorded for its Kia Seltos rival.
On average, Hyundai was selling 550 units of the Creta every day in 2025. The premium SUV celebrated its tenth anniversary last year, and during this period, it has recorded a CAGR of over 9%. It holds the lion’s share in its segment – 34% to be specific. In other segments, though, Hyundai is either losing its edge or has yet to find success. For instance, other premium models manufactured in India, namely the Verna and Alcazar, have been struggling for a long time now.

Hyundai plans to invest 45,000 crores in India by March 2030 to reach new heights of growth. The investment will cover the launch of 26 products, including seven new nameplates. It has confirmed its entry into MPV and off-road SUV segments, and reports say it will also launch the next-gen Bayon to compete with the hot-selling Maruti Fronx.
