New Tata Sierra will be available in ICE and electric guises and it will take on rivals in the hotly contested midsize SUV segment

Tata Motors’ next big launch, the Sierra, has been spotted undergoing rigorous real-world testing across various terrains. Once a concept and later previewed in its near-production guise, the Sierra is shaping up to be one of the brand’s most anticipated new models in years. Staying true to Tata’s dual-powertrain game plan, the SUV will arrive in both electric and petrol/diesel forms.

While Tata Motors hasn’t issued an official launch timeline, both versions of the Sierra are expected to make their market debut within the next 3-4 months. In the final month of this year, Tata is planning a new launch and it could be the petrol version of the Harrier and Safari. With the Sierra, Tata is clearly positioning itself to go head-on against the established midsize SUV players.

What is particularly noteworthy is Tata’s approach to design parity between the two Sierra variants. Both the electric and internal combustion models will look almost identical with subtle differences. The SUV is expected to sport an upright front end with a closed grille panel, swooping bonnet, sleek LED headlights linked by a full-width light bar and a muscular bumper design.

Tata-Sierra-3.jpgAt the rear, a minimalistic layout with a slim LED light strip, integrated spoiler, a shark fin antenna, high-mounted stop lamp and a boxy-looking tailgate will complete the look. Under the hood, the ICE-powered Tata Sierra is expected to feature a newly developed 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol motor delivering around 168 PS and 280 Nm.

Complementing it will be the tried-and-tested 2.0-litre diesel mill – tuned to churn out roughly 170 PS and 350 Nm of torque. Transmission duties are likely to be handled by both six-speed manual and six-speed torque converter automatic options. The battery-powered Sierra is expected to borrow plenty from the Harrier EV including dual battery choices.

While Tata hasn’t revealed if an all-wheel-drive dual-motor layout will be offered, the setup could be on the cards for higher trims. The claimed driving range could be well over 500 km on a single charge and it will support bi-directional charging. The latest spy images of the interior show a layered dashboard and a triple screen layout.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch driver’s display and a similar sized screen for the front passenger can be clearly seen along with a flat-bottom steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo and a dual-zone automatic climate control system as in the Harrier. It will also get a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, drive modes, auto-dimming IRVM, Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera system and more.
