The upcoming Maruti Suzuki midsize SUV could become the first model within the lineup to get a CNG tank positioned underneath the body
CNG vehicles are bought primarily for their fuel efficiency but they come with two downsides – one is the notable drop in performance and the other is the CNG tank occupying majority of the boot volume. As a clever engineering solution, Tata Motors introduced dual cylinder technology which has been widely accepted by customers.
In this case, two cylinders of equal capacity are arranged parallel to each other so they do not hamper much of the bootspace. Tata was followed by Hyundai which approached a similar method in its Hy CNG cars. It looks like Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest seller of CNG-equipped passenger vehicles, will move in a different direction to tackle this issue.
Maruti Suzuki sold over 6.2 lakh CNG vehicles last FY, marking a 28 per cent sales increase during the same period the previous year. The Indo-Japanese company commands a significant lead in the CNG segment holding over 71 per cent market share by the end of 2024. It is benefitted by the expansive portfolio as Maruti Suzuki offers the widest range of CNG vehicles in India.

The brand is planning to launch a new midsize SUV early next month and it will feature mild hybrid, strong hybrid and CNG options. It will become the first model to feature a CNG tank positioned underneath the bodywork. It will help liberate more space on the trunk and reportedly be the biggest update for Maruti Suzuki factory-fitted S-CNG’s lineup.
Maruti Suzuki will retail its new midsize SUV through the Arena dealership network. The five-seater might be slightly longer than the Grand Vitara. It will compete with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Mahindra Scorpio N, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, etc. Judging by the test prototypes, the SUV will be heavily influenced by the design of the e Vitara and the Grand Vitara.
