“When I started off in the industry, the first thing they told me was, ‘Your smile is too gummy; it’s too much teeth.’”

“There was a time when I used to try to smile without opening my mouth because I didn’t know how to smile,” she said, admitting that the pressure made her self-conscious.
Thankfully, Genelia didn’t give in. “Had I listened to it then, I would probably be a disaster,” she shared. “I have a more full-blown smile now. But that is the personality that I come with.”

And it wasn’t just her smile that people had opinions about. Some even suggested she change her name.
“One of the major things I heard was, ‘Change your name.’ Some said Gina, some said Gee,” she recalled. But Genelia knew those names didn’t reflect who she truly was.
She explained that her parents had created her name by combining their own. “My parents had come up with a combination of my dad and my mom’s name. Jeanette and Neil. That’s how my name is formed.”
Looking back, it’s hard to imagine anyone wanting Genelia to change. Her natural charm, bright smile, and unique name are exactly what made her stand out. Stories like hers remind us how important it is to stay true to who we are, even when the world tells us otherwise.
