The upcoming Mahindra Freedom NU platform may serve as a common base for both ICE-powered and electric models in India
Mahindra has started building momentum around a new platform reveal scheduled for August 15 in Mumbai. Slated to underpin the brand’s upcoming range of models, the architecture appears to carry the name Freedom NU. Ahead of the big unveil, Mahindra has dropped a teaser video offering a glimpse of what is coming and it carries the “Electric Origin” SUV logo and related hashtags.
It hints at the possibility that the Freedom NU platform will serve as a common base for both ICE-powered and electric models. Considering the diversification of its range, it will only make sense. If that holds true, Mahindra may be aiming for a modular solution that spans drivetrain types, streamlining future development while retaining flexibility across segments.
The next-generation Mahindra Bolero – possibly arriving with a new suffix – has been seen testing frequently on public roads in recent weeks, fuelling speculation around a potential launch this August. The upcoming Bolero may make the shift to a new architecture – likely the newly teased Freedom NU platform.

The rugged nameplate is in line for its biggest overhaul yet with features never before seen on a Bolero. A panoramic sunroof appears to be part of the package and the feature list may borrow heavily from the Scorpio N and possibly even the XUV 700. Among the shared elements could be a semi-digital instrument cluster already familiar from the Scorpio N’s cabin.
Despite the camouflage, several visual cues suggest a move toward a more modern design direction for the new Bolero. Flush-fitting door handles may lend a more premium look while the front end gets round projector-style LED headlamps nestled into a completely revised face. A multi-slat grille is present in the central section and the LED DRLs have been repositioned lower on the bumper.

Besides exterior updates, the cabin will receive revised dashboard, new steering wheel and centre console too. Currently, the Bolero is equipped with a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo diesel engine producing close to 99 bhp, coupled with a manual transmission. The upcoming generation is expected to move up to Mahindra’s more capable 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel powertrain – the same unit that features in models like the Thar 3-door and the XUV 3XO.
