The next-gen Tata Sierra is the company’s most anticipated model in years and is expected to give serious competition to the Hyundai Creta when it arrives towards the end of the year. Set to be positioned between the Nexon and Harrier, the upcoming Tata SUV will debut some breakthrough technologies and features, some first for the brand and some even for its entire segment. Here are five big things you need to know about the next-gen Sierra:
1. Two variants
The next-gen Tata Sierra will be available in pure electric and ICE variants, with the former arriving first and the latter expected to go on sale a few weeks later. Both will feature a similar boxy design, with the zero-emission derivative looking slightly cleaner and more aerodynamic.

2. AWD capability
Tata Motors is expected to offer the Sierra.ev with AWD capability as an option, targeted at adventurers who often venture off the beaten path. The AWD variant should feature a primary motor on the front axle and an additional motor on the rear axle. The latter may engage only when there’s a need for more power or traction, ensuring maximum efficiency.
3. Segment’s most powerful engine
Tata Motors will introduce a brand-new petrol engine in the next-gen Sierra. It’ll be a 1.5-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder unit producing 168 hp at 5,000 rpm and 280 Nm of torque at 2,000-3,500 rpm. Such output levels are unheard of in this segment in our market.

4. Three-screen layout
The next-gen Tata Sierra will be the first model in its segment available with not one but three dashboard displays, including a dedicated passenger touchscreen. The passenger touchscreen may allow the front passenger to stream videos, play games, and control various infotainment functions, like setting navigation, for instance.
5. Lounge version
Tata Motors will offer a lounge version in the next-gen Sierra, featuring a segment-first four-seat layout. This optional seating layout will include two regular front seats and two wider rear seats positioned further back for extra legroom. The special rear seats will be more supportive and include an extendable calf support. This version would be aimed at chauffeur-driven customers.
