Hyundai and Kia will enter the strong hybrid segment with the next-gen Creta and Seltos; Mahindra to launch three hybrid SUVs in India
Car manufacturers in India are working to diversify their portfolio with the addition of new powertrain options. While electric vehicles are currently at the top of the priority list, strong hybrid technology is also being evaluated by multiple brands for the Indian market. In this article, we will look at the manufacturer-wise upcoming hybrid SUVs launching in the coming years.
1. Mahindra (XUV3XO Hybrid, BE 6 & XEV 9e Range Extender Hybrids)
Mahindra is currently working on the development of a strong hybrid powertrain for the XUV3XO. Internally codenamed S226, it will be the brand’s first hybrid model in the Indian market. Expected to hit the roads sometime next year, i.e. 2026, the XUV3XO will employ the familiar 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine mated with the strong hybrid setup.
In addition to this, the Indian SUV market is also evaluating the range extender hybrid powertrain option for the INGLO-based BE 6 and XEV 9e. The technical development of this project has already started, and it will likely use the 1.2-litre petrol engine working as a generator to recharge the battery, which in turn will power the electric motor that drives the wheels.

2. Hyundai (Next-Gen Creta, New 7-Seater SUV & Palisade)
Internally codenamed SX3, the third generation of the Creta will get a new strong hybrid powertrain, and it is expected to launch in 2027. The hybrid system on the new-gen Creta could employ the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with an electric motor.
Hyundai is also working on a new hybrid 7-seater SUV, which will likely be launched in the year 2027. Internally codenamed Ni1i, the hybrid SUV will be positioned above Alcazar in the brand’s line-up. It could share the strong hybrid setup with the new-gen Creta, however, nothing can be confirmed as of now.
The Palisade is also on the cards for the Indian market in 2028, and it will feature the brand’s next-gen hybrid powertrain. It will employ a 2.5-litre turbo petrol engine with a combined power output of 334 bhp and 460 Nm of peak torque.
3. Kia (Next-Gen Seltos & New 7-Seater SUV)
The next-gen Seltos is scheduled to go on sale in the Indian market next year, i.e. 2026. With the second-generation model, the Korean carmaker will introduce a strong-hybrid powertrain. The Seltos hybrid is expected to use the familiar 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with the strong hybrid setup.

Reports claim that this new strong hybrid powertrain will also be carried forward to Kia’s upcoming 7-seater SUV, which will rival the likes of Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari and Hyundai Alcazar. Internally codenamed MQ4i, it will be based on the Sorento SUV sold in overseas markets. The three-row hybrid SUV is slated for a launch in India sometime in 2027.

4. Renault & Nissan (Duster, Boreal & Nissan 5 & 7-Seater SUVs)
The 3rd gen Renault Duster will go on sale in the domestic market early next year, i.e. 2026. Based on the CMF-B platform, the Duster is expected to get a strong hybrid powertrain after 6-12 months of its initial launch. It will likely use the 140 bhp 1.6-litre petrol strong hybrid setup, paired with a 1.2 kWh battery pack.

Similarly, the Renault Boreal 7-seater SUV will also sport a strong hybrid powertrain, which will be added at a later stage. The Boreal hybrid will be powered by a 155 bhp 1.6-litre petrol strong hybrid setup, paired with a 1.4 kWh battery pack.
The Renault Duster and Boreal will also spawn two new Nissan SUVs in the Indian market. Based on the familiar CMF-B platform, the Nissan 5 and 7-seater SUVs will share the powertrain with their respective Renault counterparts, including the strong hybrid setup.
