A team of Amazon Web Services (AWS) met Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday and reinforced their committed to invest $8.2 billion over the next few years in Maharashtra.

Vaishnaw said he had a ‘good discussion’ with the team lead by Sandeep Dutta, the president of AWS India and South Asia.

“The team of Amazon Web Services explained their entire plan of investing about $8.2 billion in Maharashtra in the coming few years,” Vaishnaw said while addressinf reporters in the capital. “They are very optimistic about growth in India. They are bringing latest technologies, they are deploying the latest GPUs which is what they shared today. They are deploying some of the best compute facilities and the cloud Management Services in India.”

He said that along with the investment there will also be significant growth in employment as well.

In January this year, AWS had said it planned to invest $8.2 billion into cloud infrastructure in the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in Maharashtra, to further expand cloud computing capacity in India.

The company said this investment is estimated to contribute $15.3 billion to India’s gross domestic product (GDP) and support more than 81,300 full-time jobs annually in the local data centre supply chain by 2030.

The Government of Maharashtra and AWS exchanged a signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the World Economic Forum in Davos to formalise the investment plan.

“As we fulfill our vision of becoming a global capital for data centers, this collaboration will not only bolster our state’s technological infrastructure, but also create new opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and job creation. We are committed to fostering a conducive environment for such transformative investments and driving Maharashtra’s digital future forward,” Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said in a statement at the time.

This $8.3 billion investment is part of AWS’ larger $12.7 billion planned investment across India by 2030, announced in May 2023, to meet growing demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI) in the country.

“At AWS, we see tremendous potential for India’s digital economy to thrive for years to come with the growing demand for cloud and artificial intelligence. This is why we plan to invest $8.3 billion into cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra by 2030,” David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President of Global Public Policy and General Counsel at Amazon had said at the time.

AWS has steadily expanded its presence in Maharashtra and India over the years. The company launched its first cloud infrastructure region in India – the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region – in 2016. AWS introduced its second cloud infrastructure region in India – the AWS Asia-Pacific (Hyderabad) Region – in 2022.
